Mathematical Foundations of Optical Power Density & Ablation

1. Pulsed Laser Peak Power Equation

A pulsed laser compresses continuous energy into ultrashort nanosecond bursts. While average power might be a modest 50 Watts, each pulse delivers immense peak power:

E_pulse = P_avg / f_rep
P_peak = E_pulse / τ_pulse

For example, 50W at 30 kHz yields 1.67 mJ per pulse. Compressing that into a 200 ns pulse creates a peak power of 8.35 kW, generating millions of watts per square centimeter upon optical focus.

2. Material Ablation Thresholds

Material removal only begins when the delivered fluence exceeds the material's specific ablation threshold:

  • Polymers & Organics: Low ablation threshold (~0.2 - 1.5 J/cm²). Easily marked or cut with modest power.
  • Aluminum & Copper: High thermal conductivity and optical reflectivity require > 3 - 6 J/cm² to trigger plasma coupling.
  • Stainless Steel & Titanium: Moderate ablation threshold (~1.5 - 3.0 J/cm²), yielding high-contrast marks and crisp deep engraving.
